Transforming the Future of Urban Architecture:
A Case Study of Maharashtra National Law University

Set against the backdrop of increasing environmental concerns, the Maharashtra National Law University (MNLU) in Nagpur has embarked on a pioneering journey to redefine sustainable architecture and has become a beacon of eco-friendly and energy-efficient design.
Project Summary:
MNLU’s ambitious sustainable development project began as a competitive entry in a national design competition. With a compelling proposal focused on minimizing ecological impact while enhancing functionality, the university won the competition and set the stage for a groundbreaking venture in sustainability. From the inception, the project was more than just a construction plan, it was a commitment to future generations
Designing with Purpose
At the core of MNLU’s architectural innovation is its strategic energy-efficient envelope design. The precisely crafted façade not only reduces energy consumption but also enhances thermal comfort across the campus. To extend this efficiency, the project introduces an underfloor air distribution system specifically designed to cool the expansive classroom spaces more effectively than traditional HVAC systems.
During the scorching summer months, the campus leverages evaporative cooling technology, integrating CT coils within the Air Handling Units (AHUs) to harness the natural climate for cooling purposes. These thoughtful interventions have led to a significant decrease in energy usage—48% reduction in HVAC load and 45% in overall electrical consumption, translating to an impressively low electrical load of just 2 watts per square foot. In a stride towards achieving a Net Zero Energy Campus, MNLU proposes the installation of a 5MWp solar plant, embracing renewable energy to meet its entire electricity demand.
Water Sustainability: A Holistic Approach
MNLU has also set a benchmark in water sustainability. By adopting a Net Zero Water Development approach, the project includes extensive rainwater harvesting systems that utilize surface and rooftop water collected in 4.2-acre pond. This innovative system not only supplies freshwater needs but also significantly reduces the strain on municipal water sources.
The campus is equipped with strategically placed swales to manage storm water runoff efficiently, ensuring minimal impact on the surrounding environment. Additionally, a centralized DEWATS (Decentralized Wastewater Treatment System) treats wastewater onsite, which is then reused for non-potable purposes like flushing, landscaping, and as make-up water for HVAC systems
